What are Stretch Marks?

Wednesday 24 August 2011 @ 3:44 am

Stretch marks can be an embarrassing aspect to many people’s lives. Unfortunately, stretch marks can come about without much warning. Many people who gain weight can get stretch marks as well as people who are losing weight. The frequency of stretch marks also depends on the particular person’s body chemistry. For instance, people who have a lot of collagen in their skin may not get stretch marks as easily as others. Collagen may act the same as oily skin. Those who have oily skin do not deal with more wrinkles and stretch marks than people who suffer from having dry skin.

Stretch marks may look like long scratches or bruises on the body. These marks are often referred to as a form of scarring because they do not go away very easily. Stretch marks can appear on any area of the body that has been through a period of weight gain or weight loss. These marks can appear on the legs, stomach, chest, arms, and some people even have to deal with them on the face or neck. The most common area for stretch marks is the stomach area. Women who are pregnant often have to deal with stretch marks on their stomach because of the extreme weight gain apparent in this particular area.

One way to prevent stretch marks is to control your weight. Keeping yourself at a steady and healthy weight will prevent the skin stretching. The cause of stretch marks, after all, is from the skin stretching as far as it can. Extreme weight gain can definitely cause stretch marks. Depending on the amount of weight you’ve gained in a certain area, the stretch marks may be only a few and far between or may be in a cluster. Keeping your skin moisturized is another way to prevent stretch marks. Moisturized skin can stretch easier than dry skin. For anyone who has dealt with dry skin, they know the tight feeling that is associated with dryness. This tightness is actually the skin lacking any elasticity.

Once you have gotten stretch marks, there really isn’t much you can do to get them to go away. As stated before, stretch marks are actually scars. Scars can be permanent. Many people claim that cocoa butter can get rid of stretch marks. However, this theory will work, but only if done before getting the stretch marks. Cocoa butter is a wonderful moisturizer and, after all, moisturized skin will stretch more easily. Once you have stretch marks, cocoa butter will only prevent more from forming.

There are surgical procedures available that claim to reduce and even completely get rid of stretch marks. While these procedures may work, they are also extremely expensive. And since this type of procedure would be considered for purely aesthetic purposes, many medical insurance companies will not cover it. The most inexpensive way to get rid of stretch marks is to just wait for them to go away. As with all scars, stretch marks will fade with time. It may take several years, but your stretch marks will fade away to almost nothing.
